Located in the middle of Bogue Banks and tucked in the beautiful maritime forest, Pine Knoll Shores is every nature lover’s dream! This town has been a sanctuary for turtles and birds for many years.
Historically known as the “Isle of Pine,” this small town was owned by Alice Hoffman in 1918. Mrs. Hoffman made this her home on and off until her death in 1953. The property was willed to her niece, Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. and her four children. The Roosevelt family had a vision for the “Isle of Pine” and its development. Minimal disturbance to the island makes Pine Knoll Shores one of the state’s more ecologically-friendly towns.
Be sure to stop at the mile marker along Highway 58 at the intersection of the NC Aquarium. This marks one of the first landings in the New World by Giovanni de Verrazano, a Florentine explorer. Also make sure you visit the site of the shipwreck, Pevensy, located just offshore from where the Iron Steamer once stood.
The North Carolina Aquarium is nestled in the lovely maritime forest in Pine Knoll Shores, providing a unique look at the wildlife along the Crystal Coast. At the aquarium, you can explore a shipwreck and you don’t even need an oxygen tank!
You can watch the river otters frolic, see a rare White Sea turtle and even touch a live stingray. While exploring the sea life, take a stroll down the Alice G. Hoffman nature trail or the Theodore Roosevelt nature trail. The NC aquarium offers a wide range of events and educational programs.
