Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five towns located on the Bogue Banks, has been a popular seaside vacation spot since the 1920s. Fort Macon State Park

Come see a real piece of history. Fort Macon State Park is a five-sided Civil War fort that offers live re-enactments. Garrisoned in 1834, the fort was seized from Union forces until it fell back in their hands in 1862. Once inside, you will be overcome with the history that surrounds you. You will hear the captivating audio within the Commander’s Quarters, Enlisted Men’s Quarters, the World War II barracks and the Gunpowder Magazine. The museum and bookstore has many treasures to offer a Civil War follower that is sure to take you back in time. While visiting, please make sure to stop in the Education Center for all of the highlights that fort has to offer. Fort Macon State Park hours are 9:00AM – 5:30PM.
