Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach, the oldest of our Crystal Coast towns on the island known as Bogue Banks, grew from a beach pavilion built in the late 1800s to provide ocean-side entertainment for hotel guests staying across the sound in Morehead City.
The pavilion no longer exists, but the site on which it stood is now part of the Atlantic Beach Circle, a reference point for locals and visitors alike and a site of many planned improvements and developments. Amid the town's many renovations, Atlantic beach will undoubtedly continue to offer a 1950s beach town ambience in the many parts of town where cozy cottages date from that era.
For nine months of the year, Atlantic Beach attracts swimmers, snorkelers, surfers (windsurfing and kite surfing) and boaters. Die-hard beach-goers actually consider the other three months fair enough for on-the-water activities too! But be safe -- Atlantic Beach provides lifeguards only in season.
Anglers will find plenty of opportunities to make a catch -- the town has a fishing pier, five miles of surf fishing, and head boats and six-packs to take serious anglers to the inshore waters or the continental shelf and Gulf Stream. There are also plenty of bait and tackle shops where you'll find all the necessary equipment and probably some good advice and fishing tips. Check the e Calendar of Events in this Vacation Planner to find out when the next fishing tournament is taking place.
Those wanting to stay on dry land will also find plenty to do: a golf course, movie theaters, nightclubs and shopping are just a few options. Also enjoy the new biking and jogging paths, which are recent civic improvements.
After a long day of fun, enjoy dining at one of the many restaurants -- some on the waterfront -- with a wide range of cuisines. Locally caught seafood is featured at nearly every establishment.
There’s no greater array of accommodations anywhere on the Crystal Coast. Choose from family-owned or national chain hotels/motels, resorts, condos, and beach homes or cottages. Refer to Accommodations.
